Acne is one of the world's most common skin conditions, affecting over 85% of adolescents under the age of 24 and up to 50% of adults over 25 years of age.

Acne is NOT caused by bad diet or greasy foods. In fact, acne develops when the sebaceous glands in a person's skin produces excess oil (sebum). This oil combines with cells that line the gland walls and clogs the skin's pores. How does light therapy work?

One of the key bacteria responsible for the inflammation is Propionibacterium acnes . These bacteria produce natural chemicals called poryphyrins, which are sensitive to light at a specific wavelength. When stimulated, these chemicals become capable of neutralising the bacteria and when no bacteria are present, the inflammation subsides.

Alternating treatment sessions of red and blue light are used to treat the skin.

Blue light is used to stimulate the poryphyrins and so to eradicate the bacteria that cause the redness or inflammation of acne.

Red light has healing and anti-inflammatory properties. It helps to minimise the redness of acne lesions and promotes healthier skin.

Proven Results

In a recent study, 16 subjects with mild to moderate acne vulgaris or moderately severe cystic acne, were treated with alternate blue and red Omnilux light therapy.

An average clearance rate of over 82% was seen 12 weeks after the final treatment.

How many treatments are needed to clear up acne?

As a general rule, eight alternate blue and red light treatments are given over four weeks. There should be 48 hours rest time between treatments. While undergoing treatment, it is important to cleanse and tone the skin properly. Anti-comedonal products should be used alongside as well.

How safe is the treatment?

What results can be expected from a series of treatments?
